Live from Apple's education event in NYC

We're liveblogging from Apple's New York education event

  • We're here at the Guggenheim, standing in the cold with the rest of the press. We'd call it a party, but it's 9:22AM and everyone is sick after CES.
  • We're in our seats and... Radiohead is on.
  • These guys love Radiohead!
  • Lots of familiar faces nearby. Clayton and Natali Morris, Lance Ulanoff... the gang's all here.
  • "Ladies and gentlemen, our presentation will begin shortly. Please switch devices to silent mode."
  • And now... Adele.
  • Apple, this theater is great. You should definitely do every single event here.
  • In case you're wondering, those are iPads.
  • Okay the lights are dimming...
  • And Phil Schiller is out!

  • "Thank you."
  • "Good morning everyone. I'm pleased to welcome you here in New York. This is really special for everyone at Apple. It's about education."
  • "Education is deep in our DNA."
  • "We try to bring the same passion and energy that we put into every product we make into our education business."
  • "We're so proud to help students learn."
  • "But something profound is starting to happen — it's remarkable."
  • "Students are being introduced to the iPad."
  • "Whether it's in high school, or maybe they're a k-6 student with special needs — trying to communicate with the world."
  • "We're hearing from parents. We're starting to see great successes."
  • "But there are challenges, and they're pretty profound. If you're in high school, it's not easy."
  • "If you're a freshman, you only have a 70% chance of graduating."
  • "The US is not at the top of industrialized nations."
  • In regards to education / higher education.
  • "We spoke to teachers — before we get into what we're doing, we think it's good to hear from them about the challenges they face."

  • "Class sizes are 40 plus, buildings in disrepair."
  • "I see students having trouble with reading, writing."
  • "There are low levels of engagement."
